Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful piazzas in the historical centre of Rome. There are 3 magnificent fountains, one at either end and in the centre is Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or the (Fountain of the Four Rivers) which in 1651 was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Pope Innocent X, previously known as Giovanni Battista Pamphili. The Pamphili family are one of the most important historical families in Italy who were deeply entrenched in the Roman Catholic Church and Italian politics in the 16th and 17th Centuries.
The piazza even though more subdued than its neighbouring piazza Campo dei Fiori, still comes alive from early morning right through to the evenings when the sun goes down, this large open piazza is always buzzing with activity from extremely talented street artists, living statues to capture your attention for brief moments, musicians and vendors. Even though the piazza is surrounded by overpriced restaurants, its a treat if you are on holidays to sit and people watch for a while.
At the street markets you can either have your portrait sketched or purchase copies of famous art and posters scrolled up to take home with you, they are mostly all copies yet some of them are quite spectacular. The sketch artists stand alone with their incredible talent and you can take your pick of a comical caricature or if you choose your sketch artist wisely you can end up with a lovely portrait of yourself like I did.
The buildings surrounding the oval piazza are of spectacular Baroque Roman architecture, no other piazza in Rome can rival the beauty of Piazza Navona.
