THE MANY REASONS TO VISIT ROME, FLORENCE AND VENICE

ROME , also known as the ‘Eternal City’ is the capital city of Italy in the region of Lazio, sitting right in the centre of the ‘boot’.

The ‘Eternal City’ is world famous for its ancient ruins, incredible architecture and magnificent Renaissance art.  Everywhere corner that you turn in Rome unveils another magnificent architectural achievement, the historical centre is full of beautiful domes, arches and amazing architecturally sound buildings full of corporate offices, residential homes, little shop fronts, artists studios, fashion boutiques, restaurants, bars and other local discoveries.

Many of the standout places to visit in Rome are the most talked about Colosseum, Pantheon, Vatican City, Piazza di Spagna and the ‘Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Villa Borghese.  There are so many other wonderful parks, amphitheatures, gardens, basilicas and other unmissable monuments like the wonderful bridges all around the city crossing the famous Tiber River.

The Pantheon is one of my favourite monuments to visit in Rome, located in Piazza della Rotonda, the temple is dedicated to worshiping all of the Gods of ancient Rome and is one of the city’s best preserved monuments.

Villa Borghese is a picture perfect park that sits up above the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo.  There are two sides to the park with one rising high overlooking the centre of Rome and the other side that backs onto one of Rome’s more affluent suburb Parioli, this side of the park looks over onto the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.

Take lots of walks and ask us for local travel tips in Rome, for example a lot of tourists ask “is it safe to drinking out of the spouted water fountains that appear all over the city?” and the answer is generally YES if you are drinking from a Nasoni fountain, you will see local Roman’s filling up their water bottles with this constant flow of fresh spring water that streams in straight from the mountains. Keep following our blog to find out more about the Nasoni drinking fountains soon.

FLORENCE is a city often described as artistically elegant and full of opulence with wonderfully serene parks, world famous palace museums and breathtaking walks along the glistening Arno River.

The capital of the region of Tuscany, Florence is a city that is originally home to many of Italy’s and the worlds most acclaimed fashion designers and famous renaissance artists.  The Salvatore Ferragamo museum illustrates the designers artistic qualities and dedication to his long history of shoe design and the important role he played in international fashion.

This small city is home to a collection of many of the worlds most famous works of art, famous paintings and sculptures by geniuses Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo and many other incredible artists fill the cities well-known museums.  The most famous and oldest museum not only in Florence, yet in Europe and the world is the UFFIZI GALLERY located in Piazzale deli Uffizi.

Other remarkable galleries include Palazzo Pitti, Palatina Gallery, Boboli Garden, Accademia Gallery, Museo delle Cappelle Medicee and Palazzo Vecchio, all worth visiting at some stage in your life.

The Boboli Gardens is a magical park in Florence that boasts being home to a collection of Roman sculptures dating back from between the 16th to 18th Centuries.  Perfectly manicured gardens this is a tranquil relaxing place to visit, a maze of luscious green hedges with endless fountains, monuments and beautiful views over the city from high up on the hill.

The Arno River is one of the most important rivers in central Italy and runs directly through the centre of the city joined by the six Arno bridges, the most well known are the ‘Ponte alle Grazie’, ‘Ponte Santa Trinita’, ‘Ponte Amerigo Vespucci’ and the famous ‘Ponte Vecchio’ bridge made with medieval stone and lined with little jewelled shops.

The hidden Vasari Corridor is an enclosed passageway connecting the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti on opposite sides of the river, not often open to tourists, exclusive tours are available.  Contact us to enquire:  info@italianalluretravel.com

VENICE is an archipelago of 119 little islands all criss-crossed by glittering canals and all connected by beautiful bridges.

Apart from Venice itself and the breathtaking Grand Canal, the lagoon counts another 80 smaller islands that are scattered in the water with three of the most important islands being Murano which is famous for its exquisite glass production, Burano with all its brightly coloured houses, and Torcello is a quiet spot where time just seems to stand still.

The heart of Venice really comes alive in St. Mark’s Square, there are lots of fabulous cafes where in the summer you can enjoy sitting outside amongst the atmosphere listening to live Venetian music sipping on an espresso or in the late afternoon soaking up the sun enjoying a traditional aperitif.  My favourite place to sit is Caffe Florian, a historical coffee house that has been open since 1720 and boasts some incredibly decedent rooms inside.

The top museums to visit in Venice are without a doubt the Basilica of St. Mark’s which is the most famous church in Venice located in Piazza San Marco.  Next to the Basilica is the Doge’s Palace or in Italian ‘Palazzo Ducale’ with some of the rooms and chambers where the delicate work of some of the most important bodies in the Venetian administration were carried out.

The Academy Gallery Museum of Art is Venice’s most prized art museum containing the world’s most complete 13th to 18th Century art collections.

The Peggy Guggenheim Museum contains some of Italy’s most prized collection of modern art, and the Punta della Dogana Museum of Contemporary Art arguably houses the largest collection of contemporary art in the world!

The list of galleries, museums, basilica’s and important and magical places to visit in Venice are endless.

It’s definitely worth exploring all of the districts in Venice which are: Cannaregio, Castello, San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Dorsoduro and Giudecca.
