Rome’s Colosseum.. Il Colosseo di Roma

Rome’s Colosseum was the largest ever built amphitheatre in the Roman Empire and when it was in use  back in 80 AD supposedly it had the capacity to seat around 50,000 spectators, with such an aura it seems to be eternal having survived the fall of the Roman Empire, hordes of invasions and the bombings in World War II.  Its incredible to think that such a masterpiece in architecture can still be standing and in fact the exterior that we see today is actually the interior walls of the original standing amphitheatre itself.

Its no wonder millions of tourists visit the Colosseum each year.  Its spectacular in many ways yet can be such a long wait in the queue’s to get in to see it so I thought I’d share some images for those who couldn’t make it inside and have only had the opportunity to be amongst its external presence.

The Colosseum sits between the Esquiline and Palatine Hills so the views are quite something.

Recent 2012 reports have said that it is now in need of similar structural support to that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa with the south side of the walls now being about 16 inches lower than the north side, and there is now a 25 million Euro restoration plan in place being sponsored by businessman Diego Della Valle who is the President and CEO of the famous Italian leather goods company Tod’s.

Lets pray that the restoration process is a smooth one over the next few years and that this magnificent architectural masterpiece of a monument stays sound for the world to continue to enjoy.
