An Island holiday on Lefkada in Greece

Lefkada is an island in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece that has incredible rugged natural terrain, its a wonder more international tourists don’t know about this island, rather than the over  populated Santorini and Mikonos. If its nature and pure relaxation that you are after, no glitz and glamour this is the Greek island to visit.
Our next door neighbour.. ‘eeyore’

Home sweet home high up in the hills..

The perfect position for a lazy afternoon after a day at the beach..

Lefkada is the one of the largest islands in Greece and lives up to the reputation that this country has, with an abundance of spectacular crystal blue water beaches.  Its a wonderful place for a family holiday.

These photo’s don’t even do it justice, the colour transition from the edge of the shore to the depths of the ocean is so amazing and the water here has a really crisp saltiness on your skin that is so refreshing, no doubt it must be unbelievably cleansing for the skin, a natural remedy.

Its BYO on most beaches in Lefkada, there were none of the usual rented out perfectly aligned deck chairs and beach clubs that I was used to in Italy, yet a closer resemblance to the way Australian’s lay their towels on the sand, accept there seemed to be a shore perimeter of where to sit, and most still seemed to have their little fold up beach chairs to perch on.

Its paradise on all of the beaches here.. one of the lovely beaches to visit on Lefkada is the famous Porto Katsiki that is surrounded by a dramatic landscape of cliffs, and like a lot of the beaches on the island, to get to it be prepared for a steep decline that needs to be approached with caution yet its well worth it once you reach the pebbly sand and its beautiful surrounds.

You definitely need a map of the island to drive from beach to beach as they can be quite sparsely positioned around the island. The mountains in-between are luscious and it can be a very pleasant day of touring parts of the island.

Blue blue blue blue blue.. my absolute favorite colour!

This is my idea of the perfect day!

It can be an extremely steep decent which always means take a large bottle of water with you and something to eat for energy, as there is always the climb back up the hill, which is often rewarded with a cool refreshing little groovy bar like the one we stumbled on below that served cold ice-creams, soft drinks, spritzers and icy cold beers that went down a treat at sunset whilst watching the beautiful panoramic view.

Aperitivo hour was buzzing..

There can often be quite a strong wind that passes through the island, if you drive to some of the beaches that are more exposed like this one, the sky is filled with brightly coloured kites and their wave jumpers below soaring across the water at high speeds.  Its incredible to watch and very pretty!

Town was quaint and interesting, some pretty ruins in the process of being restored with brightly washed walls and pretty pastel homes lining the rooftops.

The piazza in the centre of town just before the crowds appeared..

Two hours later and this little bar and the main piazza was full of bronzed sun worshipers sipping on cocktails and enjoying the local playful conversation.

Other beautiful beaches that we visited on Lefkada you can find here

Lefkada has left mixed memories for me for different reasons, yet nothing can take away from the fact that its definitely a beautiful island to visit, and an island unlike many others in Greece.

I hope you have enjoyed this little detour from Bella Italia to the island of Lefkada!
