Guarding “Boy with Frog” in Venice

I wasn’t sure which one I was supposed to be staring at, the stiff looking guard or “Boy with Frog” by Charles Ray! This type of contemporary work just wasn’t quite they type of art I expected to see on the waters edge of the Grand Canal at the romantic location of Punta della Dogana. In fact it was a fascinating surprise, quite stark yet with the real life bodyguard standing so stationary, the immaculate condition that the statue is in and the breathtaking position in Venice I found him quite mesmerising.
Charles Ray is a Sculptor currently living in Los Angeles, California. I find his work takes contemporary to the extreme yet there is something about “Boy with Frog” that kept me standing there waiting and watching. Perhaps it had something to do with the magical rippling water of Venice’s Grand Canal and the spectacular sun drenched views.
