Magical little town Calcata

Surrounding walls of the tiny ancient town of Calcata

Calcata is really pretty when lit up at night

Only a short 47 km north of Rome is a strikingly isolated and magical little town called Calcata which sits overlooking the Treja Valley (Valle del Treja) in the province of Viterbo.

A town renowned for being home to many artistic residents Calcata has history dating back to the 14th Century and was once a magnet for gypsy’s and the alternative intellectual types.  In the 1930’s the town was condemned by the local government in fear of its historic walls collapsing, yet with this never to have occurred, now in the present day Calcata is a spectacular tourist destination that many are not aware of, a wonderful drive for a day to this unique destination with the offering of local restaurants, cafes and breathtaking views to absorb.

You will stumble across delicate and interesting boutiques full of books and amazingly unique art by the talented locals.  Walking the old town is pleasurable enough yet there is the Church of Santissimo Nome di Gesu which was restored in 1793 yet dates back to the 14th Century, and the Treja Valley Park is full of wonderful wild life, landscapes and lush Mediterranean greenery.

Calcata is one of the most beautiful little towns that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting and it is highly recommended on my list of day trips when visiting Rome.
