Mounted Carabinieri in Rome’s Piazza di Siena, Villa Borghese

Every year towards the end of May in Piazza di Siena in the heart of Ancient Rome there is a traditional four day event of show jumping that takes place.  This is supposably the sacred place of Italian horse riding.  On the final evening of the event each year after the prize giving ceremony the elegantly clad Carabinieri display is an extravaganza with only exclusive entry into the pop up cocktail lounge areas surrounding the edge of the piazza in the centre of my favourite park Villa Borghese, this is truly an exclusive event that I was very privileged to be able to attend.

The display is breathtaking with stunning grey and chestnut horses, all perfectly groomed performing elegant uniformed side-by-side steps, charging in perfect unison, and there were even a select few that had been trained to perform an act at the end of the display that included bowing actions to the applauding crowds and one of the incredibly beautiful horses had been trained to played dead to perfection for a number of minutes before awaking to a mountain of praise from his owner and the excited crowd.  It is such a beautiful and exciting event. The Carabinieri look stunning in their red and black uniforms, who are in my opinion the best dressed policemen on the planet! This event is a once in a lifetime experience if you are in Rome at the end of May and can manage to find yourself some tickets.
