Ancient Appia Way, Private Guided Tour to the Aquaducts

For those who really geek out on Rome’s ancient past, there’s no better monument to the Roman empire’s engineering skill than its Aqueducts. You can still see the Claudian aqueduct, in all its slightly-degraded glory, at the Parco deli Acquedotti that is a part of the Appian Way Regional Park. The best preserved section of aqueduct in Rome is part of the Aqua Claudia, the largest to be built in the city.

Towering over green fields, the 2nd-century villa Quintili is one of Rome’s unsung splendour. It was the luxurious abode of two consuls, the Quintili brothers, but its splendour was their downfall. The emperor Commodus had them both killed, taking over the villa for himself.

Continuing on the Ancient Appia you will see the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella a well-preserved tomb and museum dedicated to a Roman noblewoman who was a contemporary of Julius Caesar and laid to rest here. Take some steps on the Ancient Appia, the road today is remarkably well preserved, flanked on both sides by fields punctuated with ruins and other vestiges of Roman history, its large flat paved stones are polished by millennia of use and weathering.
